Dear Sirs, I was very proud that just a year ago, Taipei Times reported that Taiwan's press freedom ranked No. 1 in Asia and No. 32 worldwide, out-ranking the US, with 169 countries put to the test. Now, the KMT government led by President Ma Ying-jeou has turned Taiwan into a totalitarian police state, intent on arresting all opposition leaders with many already in custody without indictment, the latest being the former president Chen Shui-bian (see Taipei Times Chen Shui-bian chained). The situation is getting worse on a daily basis with police brutalizing people carrying national flags, beating reporters, storming into houses and hotel rooms. I would like to call your attention to a recent joint statement by US, European and Australian scholars and writers expressing concern about prosecutions in Taiwan. You can find a copy at my blog site at http://injustice-in-justice.
Please let me know if you need any further information. I thank you for your work in making our world a better place.
Sincerely,
Dr. Luby Liao, University of San Diego
